Today we’re going to delve into two crucial topics: the impact of surfing on the environment, and the importance of sustainability. As surfers, we are very fortunate to enjoy the waves and the beauty of the ocean; however, we should also be aware that it is our responsibility to protect and preserve this important ecosystem.
The ocean is way more than just a place for surfing. It’s an ecosystem with an abundance of life and biodiversity. However, this marine biodiversity is endangered, affected by contamination and climate change. The ocean plays a vital role in climate stability by absorbing carbon dioxide and regulating global temperatures. It's our responsibility as surfers to raise awareness about these issues and take action to protect what we love.
Oceanside Gran Canaria has rolled out several sustainable initiatives that are worthy of recognition. One of these is the reduction of plastic waste. Local surf shops have prohibited the use of plastic bags and have joined in on beach and seabed cleanup activities. Additionally, surf schools are using eco-friendly products, to avoid causing water contamination and doing damage to marine life.
Environmental education also plays a crucial role within the surfing community of Las Palmas. Volunteer programmes have been implemented to allow young surfers to actively participate in the conservation of the marine environment.
As surfers, we all play a big role when it comes to protecting the ocean. A good start for us is to pick up sustainable habits such as reducing consumption of plastics and choosing eco-friendly products. Other ways to make a difference are by participating in beach cleanups and furthering environmental education. Don’t forget: every little helps.
In conclusion, surfing and sustainability go hand in hand. The surfing community of Las Palmas is an example of how we can enjoy our favorite sport whilst protecting the ocean. Together, we can ensure a sustainable future for surfing and the community behind it. So, the next time you go out to catch some waves, go as an ambassador of sustainable surfing and spread the message of caring for our shrine, the ocean, and preserving it.
¡See you in the water, responsible surfers!
