Tips for Taking Care of Surfing Gear

Keep Your Equipment in Perfect Condition

Welcome, surf enthusiasts! At Oceanside Gran Canaria, your Surf School in Gran Canaria, we understand that your surfboard and gear are an essential part of your life, and taking care of them is crucial for prolonging their lifespan and keeping them in perfect condition.

In this post, we'll provide you with some key tips to ensure that your surfing gear is always ready to ride those epic waves.

1. Avoid leaving your board in the sun for too long

The sun can be both a friend and an enemy to surfers. While we enjoy the warmth and sunlight, we must remember that the sun can be unforgiving to our boards. The wax applied to the board's surface can easily melt under direct sunlight. Therefore, after each session, make sure to store your board in a shaded area to prevent the wax from melting and to maintain optimal grip on the waves.

Avoid leaving the board inside the car.

One common mistake surfers sometimes make is leaving their surfboard inside the car on a sunny day. This can be problematic, especially in warm climates. As mentioned earlier, the wax used on the surfboard can melt, and the board itself might deform due to the heat.

2. Rinse your wetsuit and board after each session

After an exhilarating day of surfing, it's important to take care of your wetsuit and board. Rinse your gear with fresh water to remove salt and sand that may have accumulated. Additionally, give your board a thorough rinse to eliminate seawater salt. This will help prevent corrosion and maintain your gear's performance for a longer period.

3. Avoid leaning your board against a wall

When you're not surfing, ensure you place your board on the ground with the fins facing upward instead of leaning it against a wall. This prevents wind or gravity from unbalancing the board and causing it to fall, potentially leading to serious damage. It could even hit someone nearby.

4. Don’t sit or lie on the board out of the water

Your surfboard is a delicate yet resilient tool. However, sitting or lying on it out of the water can cause serious damage. Avoid putting unnecessary weight on the board, as it could result in fractures or dents that are difficult to repair.

5. Proper storage and protective cover

To keep your board in optimal condition, store it in a cool, dry place when not in use. It's also advisable to use a protective cover for transportation, safeguarding it from scratches and impacts. Regularly inspect your board for possible dents or damages and repair them promptly to avoid major issues.

6. Regularly change the wax

Wax is essential for maintaining a good grip on your surfboard. However, over time, it can wear out and lose its effectiveness. Therefore, it's important to change the wax regularly to ensure your board has the best possible grip on the waves.

By following these tips, you'll be able to keep your surf gear in excellent condition and enjoy an optimal surfing experience. Enjoy the waves and keep your equipment in perfect shape!
